(Find more information about MCL reconstruction surgery. Also find info about MCL reconstruction.)
MCL reconstruction surgery replaces the injured or insufficient Medial Collateral Ligament and is often ACL MCL reconstruction.1
To diagnose that there is a need for MCL reconstruction, an orthopedic surgeon will perform various tests to determine the degree the knee wobbles, and what range of motion there is.1 They may also conduct blood or urine test for abnormalities.1 Because the MCL is filled with blood, it will usually heal on its own, so the doctor has to decide if it is severe enough for surgery.1 If it is not, you may be instructed to wear various braces and use crutches as well as go to rehab.1
MCL reconstruction protocol is the patient is anesthetized and arthroscopy is preformed to assess the condition of the MCL and prepare the inside of the knee.1 The doctor uses the arthroscope to stitch the ligament together and possible anchor it to one of the bones.1 Then the knee is braced.
Recovery takes several months.1 You use crutches and a brace until the doctor says otherwise and ice the knee.1 You also have to avoid sports.1 You can be restricted for 9-12 months after surgery.1 You will probably have to attend MCL reconstruction rehab.
MCL surgery risks include blood clots (rare), surgical wound infection, risk of developing arthritis, weakening of muscles, and lack of full range of motion. |
